| In my opinion, I haven't heard Bob Dylan sound so fresh, since his 70's stuff, although his last release, "Time Out Of Mind", was an ethereal, cerebral masterpiece due to the soundscape produced by the amazing Daniel Lanois. This new group of songs was produced by Jack Frost, whom I'm not familiar with, but I'll be looking for more projects from him.
There is a spectrum of all Dylan styles on display, including some caberet-stylings, which took me by surprise. The majority of this album showcases his writing in the blues vein by covering grooves from rockabilly & swing to hardcore gritty blues shuffles. There's even a refreshing tune midway through verging on traditional bluegrass, but with a percussive orchestral twist, which is super cool. At certain periods of Bob Dylans career, his voice has been very grating, to say the least, but his singing on this record covers the gammit of his abilities. The vocal melodies are catchier and more pronounced, but his voice seems clearer and more relaxed at the same time. Anyway, Bob seems revitalized and I'm real sorry I missed seeing him live on this tour 'cause I heard it was straight up & down... awesome! By the way, the players on the record include Larry Campbell, Charlie Sexton, Tony Garnier, David Kemper & Augie Myers. http://www.bobdylan.com |
